This training shuttlecock, aptly named AS1, is a consumer-grade product specifically created for the sport of badminton. Unlike traditional feathered shuttlecocks that are often destroyed after several points, rendering them useless, the AS1 is constructed from strong and lightweight Rip Stop Nylon. This material not only ensures a longer lifespan for each shuttlecock but also maintains its playability. Additionally, the vibrant color of the AS1 makes it highly visible during play, making it an ideal choice for both beginners and professionals.

The AS1 is operated by twisting the nose piece clockwise or counterclockwise, which adjusts the threaded adjustment screw. This action fans the flexible frame and ripstop in, altering the flight characteristics of the shuttlecock. The intuitive design allows players to easily customize their training experience.

The Adjustable Shuttlecock project was undertaken by Ian Hughes as part of a semester-long assignment at the California College of the Arts. Hughes conducted extensive research, interviewing a range of badminton players, from beginners to professionals, to gather insights and observations. Over 50 sketch models were created, and rigorous flight testing was performed to arrive at the final design.

The AS1 has garnered recognition in the design world, receiving the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Sporting Goods, Fitness, and Recreation Equipment Design category in 2013.
